Getting Ready for Thanksgiving

November 17, 2010 By Lokness 4 Comments

There is one more week until Thanksgiving. I think it is time to get moving.

This will be my first Thanksgiving at home. For the first two years in the US, I didn’t really celebrate Thanksgiving. I didn’t know what Thanksgiving was, and I didn’t pay too much attention about it. I just used the long-weekend holiday to have some fun and relax. In my third year in the US, I went to a family friend’s house. I had my first turkey, and my first Thanksgiving meal. Even through the friends are Chinese, but the meal was nice. My fourth Thanksgiving was with Bryan. We were dating at the time. I went to his parents’ house. Bryan is Salvadorian, so they don’t have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Instead, they have lunch. I had a incredible turkey sandwich. That has to be one of the best sandwiches. And later, we went to Bryan’s friend’s family for a traditional American meal. In there, I had my first dry turkey, but I also discover my love with green bean casserole. Hahaha… Last few years, Bryan and I had our Thanksgiving lunches with Bryan’s family and dinners at a friend’s house.

This year, I will be hosting my very own Thanksgiving meal. My sister has just came to the US, so I finally have family in the country. And, we can celebrate Thanksgiving together. The dinner will just be Bryan, my sister and me, but I am still very excited. I have my menu all planned out. I have bought the turkey already. It is a 7-lb little turkey. And, I just finished organizing all the recipes, and writing down the shopping list.

Bryan & I have been dreaming about these chicken t Bryan & I have been dreaming about these chicken tenders from Sesame Grill @sesamegrill_626 for a few days. These tenders are unlike any we had before. Crunchy crust, yet delicate & not too heavy. The meat is super juicy & soft. Very simple food, but really well executed! Sesame Grill was original a fine dining restaurant, they redid their menu because of the pandemic & started to sell tenders only. And that got really popular! Incredible story & hope they’ll continue do well. If you’re ever in the area, definitely check them out.

Char Siu with Rice (叉燒飯) is a dish that I ca Char Siu with Rice (叉燒飯) is a dish that I can never get enough. Since I didn’t live close to a Chinese restaurant for a long time, I have been making my own for years. This week, I finally reshot the photos & gave a quick update for the recipe. Juicy & tender pork coated in a slightly sweet BBQ sauce, then top them over some hot steamed rice with a sweet soy sauce. Every bite is so satisfying!

Almost every year, I make holiday treats for famil Almost every year, I make holiday treats for families, friends & Bryan’s coworkers. (Except last year, because we just moved to Northern California.)🎁 Year after year, I was told that their favorites are the marshmallows!
.
Homemade marshmallows are really something special. Soft & pillowy, and they’re usually less sweet & flavored. I have 3 flavored marshmallow recipes on the blog, chocolate, raspberry & orange. Chocolate is no doubt the most popular. If you prefer something fruity, raspberry is the one to go. If you’re looking for something unique, definitely try the orange.
.
Don’t ask me to pick a favorite, because I do love them all. Another plus about marshmallows is that they last for at least 2 weeks (likely longer), so you have plenty of time to give them out to friends or finish them yourself!
