I have one sister, Hei Man. She is 8 years younger than me. When I was 16 years old, I came to the US. At the time, my sister was only 8. We saw each other one or two times a year, and we talked on the phone once a while. For the things I know, she doesn’t know. For the things she knows, I have no idea. We are sisters, but we were far apart in heart and in real life for the past 8 years.
Until the past July, Hei Man follows my footsteps and comes to Los Angeles for college. At the beginning, I was very excited, and I also felt pretty weird. I just didn’t know Hei Man. I didn’t know what her favorite color is; I didn’t know what her favorite movie is; I didn’t know what kind of food she likes. But I am glad that I have opportunity to get to know her again.
In last few months, there were ups and downs of course. There were arguments as all sisters would have. However, I am very happy to have my sister around. I finally have a family member that is close by. I have someone to speak to in Cantonese. I have someone to go shopping with. And, I have someone to share secrets with.
I know that Hei Man and I would get along really well. We just need to some times to adjust, and find our way to communicate, then we will be good. So far, so good. We are definitely getting there. We are going have some fun times together. š
